Finch Feeders

The Finch family of birds resides in residential areas where bird watchers and finch fans hang these feeders in hopes of attracting these tiny birds into their backyard. If you’re not family with these little crooners you will love bringing their music to your backyard. Take a close look at all of the finch feeders USA Bird Supply offers; glass finch feeders, sock finch feeders, thistle feeders, nyjer feeders and more!

Finches are talented and acrobatic songbirds and are often welcome in gardens. Two of the most common types of finches seen in North America are the house finch and the goldfinch. House finches are recognizable by patches of deep red in their plumage, while goldfinches are best known for their sunny yellow feathers.

Lifestyle of Finches

The Finch families of birds migrate through out the seasons. It is important to understand the migration patterns of these birds so you are prepared for their arrival. During the breeding season as well as winter finches will spend time in southern Canada and scattered through out the United States and Mexico. Finches can be spotted year round in areas of northeastern United States as well the mid west. Finch populations who reside in northern U.S will often spend winters in Mexico.

Feeding Finches

Although finches are comfortable feeding among other songbird species, it is best to provide a finch feeder to satisfy their specific needs. The finch's taste differs from that of most songbirds, with a strong preference for nyjer seed, sometimes referred to as thistle seed. Not only is nyjer seed great for finch-specific feeding, but also is generally uninteresting to squirrels and other critters. These narrow black seeds are best offered in a specially designed finch feeder featuring tiny oblong feeding ports or a custom screen enclosure.

Finches will feed on insects for protein for themselves and their young. They also feed on maple sap, berries, and tree buds. But when finches spot a feeder they often will all flock to the feeder sometimes overcrowding the feeder and even fighting for food. It is often considered a good idea to hang a few finch feeders through out your backyard in order to ensure every bird has a chance to enjoy some feed. The types of finches bird watchers will most commonly see at their feeders are goldfinches, Cassin Finch, purple finches, house finches, cardinals, sparrows and grosbeaks.

Other types of birds may discover your finch feeder, but one of the fantastic qualities of goldfinches is that they are skilled at clinging and feeding upside-down. Select an upside-down finch feeder or a refillable finch sock to discourage other types of birds and provide endless entertainment right outside your home.

Be sure to clean and refill your finch feeder regularly; It is not unheard of for a goldfinch to invite up to 30 of his closest friends for dinner, so when your attracting these little friends be prepared for quite the party!
