Hummingbird Diet & Lifestyle

Hummingbirds’ feed mostly by sight on regularly followed routes, or what is referred to as “traplining”. In other words these birds are creatures of habit, they develop a feeding routine and rely on this path to supply them with their energy. A hummingbird feeder will add attraction and appeal for these hummers and it will routinely bring them to your backyard. Hummingbirds drink nectar (known as the sweet liquid inside certain flowers). They feed on small meals and can spend an inordinate amount of time eating; in other words these little birds are slow eaters and it takes even slower to digest. These small birds can eat more than they weigh and do not like to spend all day flying. So if your backyard invites hummingbirds, they may spend a good portion of their time perched in your yard.

Attracting Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds migrate to take advantage of warm weather and flourishing blooms, so your region within North America can help you determine the best time to make your hummingbird feeder available. Wherever you reside, be sure your feeder is positioned in full or partial shade. For yards without much foliage, a protective dome can help block the hot sun as well as deflect rainwater. If hummingbirds have yet to discover your backyard, there are many types of annual and perennial flowers you can plant to attract them including honeysuckles, trumpet vine, petunias, fuchsias, lilacs and more. It is important to know that hummingbirds have little to no sense of smell so they rely on their visibility to find food, planting flowers with little fragrance but lots of nectar will often be the key to catching a glimpse of these beauties.

Not only will hummingbirds feed on the nectar of certain flowers but they will also feed on sugar- water from bird feeders. A major benefit to hummingbird feeders is it allows you and your family to observe up close while you provide a source of energy for these birds. However, the sweet sugary water does not just appeal to hummingbirds but also can attract insects such as bees, ants, and wasps. Other birds such as woodpeckers and orioles, which are larger in size, will also be tempted to grab a bite of the sweet nectar. Because of the large size of these birds the hummingbird feeders will often tip and cause the liquid inside to drain.

Caring for your Hummingbirds

To keep your birds healthy, clean your hummingbird feeder once a week or more and refill with fresh nectar. Also consider features such as ant moats and bee-proof feeding ports to help keep out unwanted guests and bacteria. It is important to take care of your flowers carefully, especially when you are supplying these hummingbirds access to your garden. Do not use pesticides on or around plants when attracting hummingbirds. The pesticides are not only poisonous to the hummingbird but it also kills the small insects that hummingbirds feed on for a source of protein.

Hummingbird Feeders

The small size and delicate nature of hummingbirds have been the inspiration of many whimsical hummingbird feeder designs, from dancing mobiles to imaginative hot air balloons. Most hummingbird feeders are designed to be attention seeking to adhere to their visual instincts. Hummingbirds are sensitive to ultraviolet light but are attracted to bright colors such as reds and oranges. At USA Bird Supply you will find a broad selection of colorful feeders that will entice any hummingbird to your backyard.

If you hang a feeder, be patient, eventually hummingbird’s investigative instincts will bring them to your backyard.
