Tube Bird Feeders

Tube feeders are like cars; there's a model to meet all needs and preferences. Generally, this is popular style of bird feeder among backyard birding enthusiasts because it is designed to accommodate small to medium sized birds such as cardinals, chickadees, finches, goldfinches, redpolls, sparrows, wrens and more.

Select from a variety of colors and sizes, ranging from a stout 8" in height to 36" or taller. When choosing a size, consider how many birds you would like to see visiting simultaneously as well as how often you intend to refill your feeder. For example, if your birds tend to be territorial and opposed to sharing their feeder, it may be wise to provide four 8" tube feeders placed throughout your yard instead of one large feeder. Types of Tube Feeders

The type of seed can also determine the type of tube feeder you should purchase. There are two main types of tube feeders; the tube feed that commonly holds mixed seeds and the thistle tube feeder that holds thistle seeds.

Thistle tube feeders are long and thin and contain smaller feed slots and multiple perches. The seeds in a thistle bird feeder are commercially referred to as thistle seeds but the appropriate name for this type of seeds is called “nyjer” seeds. These thistle bird feeders typically attract smaller birds such as goldfinches. Upside down thistle feeders are an appropriate choice when attracting finches and pine siskins because of the ports underneath the perches allow the birds to hang upside down and feed.

Tube Bird Feeders are long and thin feeders with a number of perches as well as larger slots to accommodate larger birds. Tube feeders can hold a variety of foods such as mixed seeds, black oil sunflower seeds, and peanuts.

Tube Feeder Tips

To keep your backyard tidy, attach seed trays to the bases of your tube feeders. Cleaning tube feeders is not always a simple task, but plenty of models offer solutions such as removable bases and feeding ports, as well as an internal baffle to prevent seed and debris from resting at the base.

The most simplistic and the best fix for those pesky squirrels are the tube feeders. If squirrels are prevalent in your backyard, select a feeder with a steel lid that locks or is heavily weighted and protect your feeder with a squirrel baffle.
