Encourage birds to nest in your backyard by hanging or mounting a birdhouse. Birdhouses are often specially designed to attract a particular species, as many birds prefer different homes. For example, wren and bluebird homes may appear similar, but the average wren home height should be between 6 and 8 inches, while a bluebird house should range from 8 to 12 inches tall.

There are a number of animals in the wild that pose a threat to birds and their young. Cats, squirrels, raccoons, possums, snakes, and even insects pose a threat to nesting birds. To deter predators and other nuisances, consider mounting your birdhouse on an aluminum pole versus a tree trunk or wooden pole. If necessary, invest in a squirrel baffle for added protection.
